The first device to explore Android XR is called Project Moohan, it was developed by Samsung and will be available for purchase in 2025.
Google and Samsung have unveiled a new operating system created “for the next generation of computers,” which they called Android XR, a platform that combines Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR).
“What once seemed like science fiction is now reality thanks to extended reality (XR), which is revolutionizing the way we connect with the world,” Samsung said.
Android XR will launch first in headsets to transform the way you watch, work and explore. The first device, codenamed Project Moohan and developed by Samsung, will be available to buy next year.
According to the South Korean company, the goal is to offer a “dynamic canvas” that integrates sight, sound and movement. As for the fields of application, it pointed out work, learning, entertainment, video games, health and well-being.
This new platform harnesses the power of Gemini by integrating a conversational user interface (UI) with contextual understanding of the world around it. Its capabilities go beyond controls or gestures by incorporating voice and conversations, which also positions the platform as an AI assistant.
The first headset designed for Android XR already exists, known as “Project Moohan” (which means “infinity” in Korean) and for now Samsung suggests it to explore the world with Google Maps, enjoy sporting events on YouTube or plan trips with the help of Gemini.
“XR has gone from being a distant promise to becoming a reality. We believe that it can open up new and meaningful ways of interacting with the world, significantly impacting daily life and overcoming physical barriers,” said Won-Joon Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D at Samsung’s Mobile eXperience Business.
According to Google, Android XR will also support glasses in the future to give users “all-day support.” It said it soon began testing prototypes of Android XR glasses with a small group of real-world users.
