The company behind ChatGPT has unveiled Project Stargate, with the goal of building more hardware in the US over the next four years.
Artificial Intelligence is turning to the current situation, and investments in the United States are beginning to fall. OpenAI announced Project Stargate , a new company that intends to invest 500,000 million dollars (mdd) in the next four years to build a new AI infrastructure for companies in the United States.
“We will begin investing $100 billion immediately. This infrastructure will ensure American leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of American jobs, and generate enormous economic benefits for the entire world. This project will not only support the reindustrialization of the United States, but will also provide a strategic capability to protect the national security of the United States and its allies,” the platform said on X.
SoftBank and OpenAI are the lead partners of Stargate, with SoftBank providing financial support and OpenAI providing operational support. Masayoshi Son, CEO of the investment firm, will serve as chairman.
Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle and OpenAI are the key initial technology partners. Development is currently underway, starting in Texas, and the ChatGPT creator noted that it is evaluating potential sites across the country for more campuses, as agreements with the entities are finalized.
The partner companies will work closely together to build and operate this computing system. This builds on a close collaboration between OpenAI and Nvidia dating back to 2016 and a more recent partnership between OpenAI and Oracle.
“We all look forward to continuing to build and develop AI (and in particular, artificial general intelligence) for the benefit of all humanity. We believe this next step is a critical step along the way and will allow creative people to discover how to use AI to improve humanity.”
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) refers to a type of artificial intelligence that has the ability to perform any intellectual task that a human can perform.
Unlike narrow or specific artificial intelligence, which is designed to perform limited and specific tasks - such as speech recognition, content recommendation or autonomous driving - AGI seeks to have broad cognitive abilities and a general understanding of the world.
