Nvidia to bring video games to self-driving cars

The company announced that it will integrate its cloud gaming service, GeForce NOW, into vehicles from brands such as BYD, Polestar and Hyundai.

The mobility of the future lies in electric and autonomous vehicles. Technology companies such as Nvidia know this , and it is going to enter this market from the entertainment side, as it announced a collaboration between different automotive brands to integrate its cloud gaming system, GeForce NOW .

In the next generation of vehicles, entertainment will be a core part of the brands' offering, said Danny Shapiro, vice president of automotive at Nvidia, during an event ahead of its presentation at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2023.

GeForce NOW is Nvidia's cloud gaming service that allows you to access more than 1,000 titles without the need for a console, as these can be streamed on different devices, such as computers, televisions, smartphones or now on a car screen.

The model of this service consists of a monthly subscription, which gives access to different games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Farcry 6, Life Is Strange, Battlefield V or the popular Genshin Impact and Fortnite, among others.

According to Nvidia’s announcement, the service will be available in vehicles from a few initial partners, which will be BYD, Hyundai and Polestar. “Gaming is an economically viable industry,” Shapiro said of the decision to incorporate the service in cars. “The subscription fee (to GeForce NOW) won’t go up, but the value to the user will.”

Shapiro also explained that while a Wi-Fi connection is the ideal way to use this Nvidia service, in the case of cars, a “reliable connection” to a 4G or 5G network will be required to have the best gaming experience.

Foxconn and Nvidia team up to create an automated electric vehicle

In other automotive announcements, Shapiro shared that Foxconn is developing an electric, autonomous vehicle powered by Nvidia Drive, a platform that uses high-performance computing and artificial intelligence (AI) to process data and locate the car on a map to plan and execute the safest route.

The executive also mentioned that Mercedes-Benz has begun using digital twins developed by Nvidia to optimize its new production processes, where they can react to unforeseen supply chain configurations based on a series of virtual simulations.

Nvidia also wants more development in its Omniverse

Another important announcement made by the company was regarding Omniverse, the open platform focused on three-dimensional design collaboration and digital twins.

Richard Kerris, vice president of Omniverse, highlighted that this tool will have innovations such as the possibility of scaling video content to 4K quality in Chrome and Edge browsers based on AI, in addition to new opportunities for remote collaboration.

It is worth mentioning that interoperability will be a key element for Omniverse, since it is a tool that operates in the cloud, it will be possible to carry out something that Nvidia called Creative Jam Sessions, that is, meetings of creators from different places in the same space who collaborate using the creation systems of their preference.
