Qué tiene de especial DeepSeek, la nueva herramienta china de inteligencia artificial (y en qué se diferencia de ChatGPT o Gemini)
DeepSeek, China's new artificial intelligence (AI) model, has shaken up the digital world, dazzling investors and sinking the shares of some technology companies, after jumping to the top of app downloads in the Apple Store.
It was launched on January 20 and quickly captivated computer enthusiasts before capturing the attention of the entire technology industry and the world.
US President Donald Trump called the phenomenon a "wake-up call" for US companies, which must focus on "competing to win."
What makes DeepSeek so special is its creators' claim that it was produced at a fraction of the cost of other cutting-edge models like OpenAI's ChatGPT, because it uses fewer high-tech chips.
That prospect caused chip giant Nvidia to lose nearly $600 billion of its market value on Monday, the biggest one-day drop in U.S. history.
DeepSeek also raises questions about Washington's efforts to contain Beijing's drive for technological supremacy, which includes restrictions on exports of advanced chips to China.
But Beijing has stepped up its efforts with President Xi Jinping declaring AI a top priority. And startups like DeepSeek are crucial as China pivots from traditional clothing and furniture manufacturing to advanced chip technology, electric cars and AI.
Here we tell you what it is all about.
In simple terms, DeepSeek is an AI-powered chatbot, like ChatGPT.
It's a free app that can be downloaded from the Apple Store, where DeepSeek claims it's designed "to answer your questions and enhance your life efficiently."
But the AI model that powers it — called R1 — has some 670 billion parameters, making it the largest open-source language model to date, according to Anil Ananthaswamy, author of Why Machines Learn: The Elegant Math behind Modern AI .
It is said to be as powerful as OpenAI's O1 model, which powers ChatGPT, in mathematics, coding, and reasoning.
It is also said to be able to do all this much more cheaply; its developers say it cost $6 million to build, a shoestring budget compared with the billions invested by AI companies in the US.
It is unclear how they obtained it. DeepSeek's founder allegedly stockpiled Nvidia's advanced A100 chips before their export to China was banned in September 2022.
Experts believe that this supply, which some estimate at 50,000, allowed him to build such a powerful AI model by pairing these chips with cheaper, less sophisticated ones.
DeepSeek looks and feels like any other chatbot, although it leans more toward conversation.
Much like OpenIA's ChatGPT or Google's Gemini, you can open the app (or its website) and ask it questions about anything, and the chat will do its best to give you an answer.
His answers are extensive, but he doesn't give an opinion even if you ask him directly for one.
The chatbot often begins its response by saying that the topic is "highly subjective" - whether it's politics (Is Donald Trump a good president?) or soft drinks (Which tastes better, Pepsi or Coca-Cola?).
He doesn't even commit to saying whether it's better or not than its rival ChatGPT, but he did make a comparison of the pros and cons of both AIs. ChatGPT did exactly the same thing, using similar language.
DeepSeek says it was trained on data up to October 2023, and while the app appears to have access to up-to-date information, the web version does not.
This is similar to early versions of ChatGPT and is likely a similar attempt at protection, to prevent the chatbot from spewing incorrect information onto the web in real time.
It can also respond fairly quickly, although it's currently a bit slowed down by the load of so many users rushing to try it out since it went viral.
ChatGPT and Gemini tend to promote their subscription services, which can run around $20 per month, for more detailed information, while DeepSeek is free but more limited.
